Félix Tshisekedi, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, expressed his condolences to the American people and the family of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, who passed away on Sunday, December 29, at the age of 100. In an official statement, Tshisekedi paid tribute to this “exceptional” statesman who left a lasting impact on history through his dedication to democracy, peace, and human rights. “His values remain a source of inspiration for the entire world,” he declared.

President Tshisekedi also acknowledged Jimmy Carter’s enduring legacy through the Carter Foundation, particularly his contributions to promoting peace and democracy. The Carter Center, founded by Jimmy Carter, played a significant role during the general elections on December 20, 2023, in the DRC. The International Election Observation Mission (IEOM) deployed by the Carter Center consisted of 44 experts and international observers, including 24 long-term observers based in 12 provinces. This mission assessed technical preparations, the campaign, result compilation, as well as electoral dispute management.

In its final report released in July 2024, the Carter Center noted improvements compared to previous electoral cycles while also highlighting irregularities, especially in result compilation.
